Tax Return 2023-2024

What is a tax return?

A tax return is a form that you need to complete and submit to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) each year to report your income and expenses. It helps the ATO calculate how much tax you owe or if you're eligible for a tax refund.

Who needs to file a tax return?

If you have earned income in Australia or have worked in Australia during this financial year (from July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2024), you will likely need to file a tax return. This applies to both residents and non-residents for tax purposes.

How is income taxed?

In Australia, income is taxed based on a progressive tax system. This means that the more you earn, the higher the tax rate you pay. The tax rates range from 0% to the highest marginal rate, which is currently 45% for individuals.

What are the deductions and expenses?

When completing your tax return, you can claim deductions for certain expenses related to your work or investments. Common deductions include work-related expenses, self-education expenses, and certain types of investment expenses. Deductible expenses can help reduce your taxable income and lower the amount of tax you need to pay.

Refunds or tax owed?

After you lodge your tax return, the ATO will assess your income and deductions. If you have paid more tax than you owe, you may be eligible for a tax refund, which will be paid to you by the ATO. If you have not paid enough tax, you may have a tax debt and will need to make arrangements to pay it.

In 2021, the average Australian tax refund was $2,800!
